The ML4500 driver is already available within CUPS, great! Then print a test page just to make sure that the port settings were okay and away it went. No problem, no hassle, no sweat! Very clear output and just like my old HP Laserjet 5L it chugs along, but at twice the printing speed! Thanks chaps. SomeBloke.

you only have to look at the likes of HP to see they usually do not release new drivers for old printers/burners on new Windows to realize that the only sane way to move to Vista is to get a complete new machine with Vista installed.... MS is apparently already taking out features for Vista's replacement....so here

I'm not sure what the cutoff time should be, but old hardware not being compatible doesn't seem like an OS problem in and of itself. The problem is that because the LJ IIp Plus is such an old printer, HP didn't bother to write an XP driver for it. Although Microsoft did, its XP drivers for old printers are pretty barebones.
